Online social networks (OSNs) have transformed the way individuals, groups, and companies communicate and interact with their friends, colleagues, fans, and customers. The majority of these posts vanishes amid the online deluge while a few posts draw extraordinary attention – these viral posts become “buzzes”.
In this lunchtime seminar, Dr Nora Jansen will explore the real-time detection of buzzes in OSNs. Buzzes can have both positive and negative consequences and therefore detecting them early is important across a variety of settings. For instance, some buzzes can generate probable future economic benefits whilst others create growing social pressure on companies, groups, or individuals. Nora’s research develops an enhanced detection system that distinguishes different buzz types and focuses upon the role of opinion leaders.
